Vera Mae Simmons

Vera Mae Piver Simmons of Whiteville, NC, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 30, 2022 at home with her family by her side. She was born on May 22, 1934 in Columbus County to James Harry Piver and Lenny Mae Ward. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband James Omega Simmons, three sons; James Alfred Simmons, Jerry Talmadge Simmons and Larry Hugo Simmons and a daughter; Elizabeth Carol Ward and and sisters; Virginia Taylor, and LaRue Vick and brothers; J. T. Piver, James (Buck) Piver, James Harry (Junior) Piver, Jr, Mitchell Piver, and Hubert Piver

She worked in the textile industry with National Spinning and the Blue Jean Factory. She was a member of the Cypress Creek Original Freewill Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter Tina King (Ted) of Ash, NC, sons; Dean Simmons (Tammy) of Clarendon, NC, and Tommy Simmons (Doris) of Chadbourn, NC, sisters; Evelyn Surles of Whiteville, NC, Romona Puckett of Shallotte, NC, and Marie Ward of Whiteville, NC and brother Bobby Dean Piver or Gainsville, FL and  17 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 2 at McKenzie Mortuary from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM. A Funeral Service will be held at the Cypress Creek Original Freewill Baptist Church on Friday, June 3 at 2:00 PM with burial following the service at the Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. Dr. Tommy Bryson will officiate the service.
