Sandra Marie Duncan, age 68, of Clayton, NC (formerly of Whiteville) passed away peacefully at Springbrook Rehabilitation and Nursing Facility, Clayton, NC on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Sandra was born in Columbus County on October 30, 1955 to the late Homer G. Duncan, Sr and Lorena Blackwell Duncan.
Sandra was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church and for many years served her Sunday School class as the designated coffee maker. Sandra loved her Whiteville community – most Friday nights she could be found at the Whiteville High football game and for a while she ate breakfast and lunch daily at The Donut Shop. Growing up, Sandra was a Girl Scout and enjoyed arts & crafts, especially pottery. She worked hard to earn her GED followed by a nursing assistant certificate. In adulthood, she spent most of her time with her loving parents. They went on daily adventures together from fishing at Lake Waccamaw and looking for deer in the Green Swamp, to driving to Wilmington or Myrtle Beach for sightseeing & shopping. She was her older brother’s biggest fan and her smile became extra bright whenever he walked in the room. He did not take this position for granted and ensured she was well cared for after their parents passed. Sandra took her role as Aunt seriously and was always ready to play and have fun with her nieces, making fond memories together.
An avid Tar Heel fan, Sandra did not miss a football or basketball game, whether on TV or in person, and she took diligent notes to track their stats. If she attended a game, she always saved enough money to buy a program so she could study more about the team. Later in life, Sandra lived in various nursing homes where she received excellent care and made lots of friends. The family would like to thank each and every caregiver for their compassionate treatment and genuine love for Sandra.
Sandra was a special person with a heart of gold. A miracle, doctors estimated she would not live past age 10 or 12. She loved Jesus and found joy in even the simplest things. She experienced many challenges but did not let those keep her from loving life and all of those around her as only Sandra could.
Left to cherish her memory are her brother; Homer Gray Duncan, Jr (Cathy), of Cary, three nieces; Margarette Harris, of Cary, Marie Otto (Jason), of Raleigh, and Meredith Khullar (Sid) of Cincinnati, Ohio, two great nieces; Catherine Grace Harris and Caroline Harris, both of Cary and a great nephew; Duncan Otto of Raleigh.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel at 2:00 pm with Rev. Darryll Hester officiating. Burial will follow at Western Prong Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 - 1:45 pm prior to the service.
McKenzie Mortuary, 112 Jefferson St., Whiteville, NC will be serving the Duncan family.
