Mona Fay Tedder McLelland, age 87, of Pittsboro, NC (formerly of Whiteville) ascended to her heavenly home on Friday, April 9, 2021. She was born on August 18, 1933, in Columbus County to the late Charlie G. Tedder and Rosa Bass Tedder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five siblings, Charles Wayne Tedder, James Audell Tedder, William Delane Tedder, Christine Tedder Case and Eloise Tedder Marker.
Mona was a dedicated lifelong member of New Hope Baptist Church in Whiteville, NC. For many years, she sang in the New Hope Baptist Church choir and served in the church business office. In her early years she was a member in the Woman's Missionary Union (WMU) and the Whiteville Business & Professional Women’s Club (BPW). Mona’s work history included Whiteville City Schools, Columbus County Board of Education and Columbus County Department of Social Services. She also was a volunteer for years in the Sunshine Shop of Columbus Regional Healthcare System.
She is survived by her husband, Edward R McLelland, one sister, Betty Tedder Smith, one son, Robert “Bob” Graham Rooks, Jr., of Whiteville, NC, and daughter Kelly Rooks Kavit (Eric) of Pittsboro, NC, five grandchildren, Brooke Kavit Bust-Webber (Sam), Jason Kavit, Nicole Rooks, Lauren Rooks, and Robert G Rooks, III, and one great grandchild, Jackson Bust-Webber.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13, 2021, in the New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Darrin Moore officiating. McKenzie Mortuary in Whiteville is serving the family. Attendees are asked to wear masks and to observe social distancing.
