Laura Neal Shipman Horrell

Laura Neal Shipman Horrell, age 87, of Clarkton, NC, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 23, 2021, at the Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Angel House in Whiteville.  She was born April 2, 1934 to the late Andrew Neil Shipman and Laura Heustess Shipman, in Columbus County.  In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters Ola Jane Tyner, Charlotte Inez Ward and Ann Vaughn and by her brothers Andrew Odom Shipman, Robert Lesane Shipman, Archie Sidbury Shipman, Sr. and John Edwin Shipman.

She was a Christian and a long-time member of Mount Zion Baptist Church.  She enjoyed reading and education, earning an Associate Degree. She worked many jobs as she traveled in the USA with her US Coast Guardsman husband. She worked as a seamstress, a lab technician, x-ray technician, packer for king crab in a cannery, and office receptionist. She worked as a volunteer EMT for several years with Clarkton, NC Rescue Squad. She enjoyed painting, sewing, gardening and spending time with family, friends and pets.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years Terrance Dean Horrell, her daughter Elaine Horrell Hughes (Geary Hughes) and son Dean Rodney Horrell (Christy Guyton Horrell), Grandson’s Aaron Hughes (Kristen Nelson Hughes) of Uppsala Sweden and Charles Madison Hughes (Kelly Walsh Hughes) of Durham, NC, Zachary Joel Horrell, great-grandson August Samuel Hughes of Uppsala, Sweden and great-granddaughter Margo Jane Hughes of Uppsala, Sweden, and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 26, 2021, at 11:00 am at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Coy Long, Jr. officiating.  The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 10:45 am prior to the service. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
