Larry Emerson"Sonny" Burroughs

Whiteville: Larry Emerson “Sonny” Burroughs of Whiteville, NC passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 3, 2020 at the Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Whiteville, N.C. 

Known for being compassionate and genuine, Larry was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He blessed all those who knew him with his caring and kindness and will be dearly missed by family and friends.  

Larry was born on November 25, 1942 in McColl, SC to the late Lonnie E. Burroughs and Gladys Gibson. He was the second of four children and grew up in McColl, and graduated from McColl Fletcher Memorial High School. Larry helped set up education programs for the Marlboro County Rescue Squad and was later recognized with becoming a Lifetime Honorary Member for his contributions. He was admitted into the Medical University of South Carolina’s Physician Assistant class where he graduated in 1976. Larry moved into Emergency Medicine in 1980 and continued to work in that arena with the last 30 years of his career at Columbus Regional Medical Center. His passion was being available to provide medical care to his community.  He was loved by his colleagues and patients alike. Larry supported the community with teaching for Physician Assistants statewide, and in hospital, the EMS Services and other community groups. 

He was preceded in death by his daughter Lauren, his beloved sisters Ann B. Hostetter, Becky B. Currin.

He is survived by his loving wife Joy Burroughs and son Kaleb Randal Burroughs of the home; mother-in-law Julia Vann Milligan; and sons Kevin Emerson Burroughs of Concord, NC (Julie), Ryan S. Burroughs of Asheville, N.C. and daughters Lesley B. Roberts (Mark) of Oak Island and Sherry Felts (Raven) of Crosby, Tx; his beloved sister Debbie B. Corse (Sandy), of Wilmington, N.C.; his grandchildren Hayden Burroughs, Camden Burroughs, Zachary Felts, Evan Felts, Izabella Felts, Brayden Sparks, Emma Sparks and one Great-Grandchild Callie Felts. 

A private family graveside service will be held Thursday, May 7, 2020, at 2:00 pm at Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Ronnie Wilson and Rev. Dale Hester officiating.
