Elizabeth Green Matthews, 81, peacefully returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, Oct. 10, 2020. Elizabeth was born May 29, 1939, in Whiteville, NC to the late George “Buster” Greene Sr. and Etha Lee “Eckie” Greene. She was preceded in death by a brother, George “Buster” Greene Jr., daughters Sarah Burney and Susan Gaskin, grandchildren William Ward and Rebecca Green, and husband Ira Matthews.
Elizabeth retired from Columbus County Social Services and was a member of Whiteville Missionary Alliance Church. Elizabeth loved her Lord Jesus, her church, her family and friends, and her little white cat.
A graveside service will be held by McKenzie Mortuary Service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, in the Whiteville Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Bobby Phillips officiating.
Surviving family include her daughters, Cheryl Powell (Walter), Gloria Gale Green (Zeke), Margaret Hinson (Donald), a son William “Tac” Ward (Gina), a brother Harry Lee Greene (Amber), eight grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, family asks memorials be made to Angel House of Whiteville, Columbus Christian Academy, or charity of choice.
