Darca Hooks High, 100, of Whiteville, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2022 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Horry County, SC on September 8, 1922 to Carlton Frantic Hooks and Edna Mattie Small Hooks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Hubert High, Sr., stepfather, Chalmers Lewis Lawson, daughter, Myra Katheleen High Britt, and sisters, Edna Carl Hooks Moody and Kathleen Hooks Battle.
Upon graduation from Coker College in 1943, she began her teaching career in Chesterfield, SC and later taught in her hometown of Nichols, SC. Darca married Hubert High of the White Marsh community on Thanksgiving Day, 1950 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Thanksgiving Day 2000. She continued her teaching career locally, primarily as a second grade teacher at Hallsboro Elementary School in the 1950's and 60's and concluded as a substitute teacher at Waccamaw Academy. She was a faithful member of White Marsh Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher and with the Women's Mission Groups. She was a wonderful cook who enjoyed trying and sharing recipes. She loved the deep relationships she shared with family and friends.
She is survived by her son, Allen H. High, Jr., of Whiteville and Son-in-law, Neil Mac Britt of Fayetteville.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care she received from Betty Strickland, Mamie Beatty, and her team at Liberty Hospice.
Visitation will be held at McKenzie Mortuary on Monday, September 26 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Funeral services will be held at White Marsh Baptist Church on Tuesday, September 27 at 2:00 pm.
