Billy Mendel Duncan of Nance Street, the Welches Creek Community and Lake Waccamaw, passed away Sunday, January 24th at Columbus Regional Healthcare. He was born in Mullins, South Carolina on May 16, 1936, the first child of Emerson Duncan and Helen Strickland Duncan.
A graduate of Hallsboro High School, Billy farmed and practiced as a Licensed Professional Land Surveyor in North and South Carolina for fifty years. Billy was a former president of the North Carolina Society of Land Surveyors, former Board Member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Waccamaw Academy, Member of the Columbus Cotillion Club and was the youngest member of White Marsh Baptist Church to be ordained as a deacon. A man who loved the great outdoors and all creatures great and small, Billy was an avid supporter and life member of the North Carolina Wildlife Action Organization.
He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Kaye Duncan Baggett and husband, Tal; Bess Duncan Hux and husband, Allen; two granddaughters, Marianna Mendel Baggett and Ella Bess Coleman, lifelong friend and mother of his children, Marian Worrell Duncan; and brothers Henry Benton and E.C. Duncan. He also leaves many friends, who enjoyed the benefits of his kindness and generosity.
In keeping with current health protocols, and to honor Billy’s personal wishes, a private graveside service is planned for the family on Friday. He loved flowers but would likely be most pleased if you would just take someone special out to lunch or dinner and tell them how special they are to you.
“Bless that parcel of time more particularly described as life and guide us as we traverse through it……” Ben Devane
