John Robert Benton went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, April 10 from his residence with his loving family present. He was born in Columbus County on December 10, 1928, the son of William Carlos and Bertha Powell Benton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Edith Batten Benton, brother, William Earl Benton, sisters, Dessie Eulene Jernigan, and Mary Spaulding. Left to cherish his memories are two daughters, Patricia Benton Settle, husband Ron, and Peggy Benton Smith, husband Dale, all of Whiteville; four grandsons: Steven Robert Settle, David Lee Settle and wife Pamela Christine all of Greenville, NC and Matthew Smith and wife Tiffany of Tennessee; Andrew Smith of Texas; 6 great granddaughters-Madison, Macy and Lexxi Smith of Tennessee, Jordyn and Addisyn Smith of Texas and Olivia Settle of Greenville, NC. Also, he is survived by one aunt Lois Novinger of Florida. Robert was a faithful member and leader of Mount Olive Original Free Will Baptist Church since 1949 serving as Deacon, Church Clerk, Treasurer, Sunday School Teacher and custodian. Family will receive friends from 6-8 Friday, April 13 at McKenzie Mortuary. His homegoing service will be on Saturday, April 14 at 2:00 at McKenzie Mortuary in Whiteville, NC with Rev. Dallas Byrd officiating. Burial will be in Flynn Cemetery. The family would like to express thanks to Dr. Dean Karras and his staff and also the staff of Lower Cape Fear Hospice. Pallbearers are Glenn Batten, Sammy Byrd, Chris Jernigan, Daryl Strickland, Charles Ward, and Shannon Ward.
