Burris Junior (BJ) Kelly of the Freeman community of Columbus County, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 20, 2019 a day shy of his 74th birthday.
He was proceeded in death by his father and mother George Burris and Winnie Mae Kelly, a sister Virgie Gause and a brother, George Beverly Kelly. He is survived by his wife, Dale Potter Kelly of the home, a daughter Sonya Kelly Bennett (Dan), two sons Barry Ray Kelly (Jill) and William James Kelly.
He has four grandchildren, Brandi Guerrero (Rolando), Michael Bennett, Hunter Kelly and Katherine Kelly. He also has three great-grandsons. He is also survived by his sister Christine Kelly Gaskins. He leaves behind his beloved dogs, Alf and Peanut as well as his grand dog, Mercy that he called “Girl”.
BJ, was born and raised on the farm that he loved. He grew up farming and later went on to have trucking and logging companies. After his retirement he began crafting rocking chairs. He was known for his straightforwardness and his love to talk. BJ never met a stranger. He spent this past summer and fall preparing to plant the farm again. The love of the land never left him.
The visitation will be at Union Grove Pentecostal Freewill Baptist Church on Friday, November 22, 2019 from 12:30-1:45 pm. The funeral service will be held at 2pm with Dr. Dan Bennett officiating.
Burial will follow at the Kelly Family Cemetery at Freeman.
